Literacy Trunk or Treat

The Rotary Club of Meriwether County partnered with the Meriwether County School System by providing support in the school-sponsored Trunk or Treat event on October 30, 2021. The event was held in the front parking area of Unity Elementary School, Greenville Middle-High School, and Manchester High School.

The Trunk or Treat event was funded thru the Literacy for Learning, Living, and Leading (L4GA) grant received by the Meriwether County School System. The Trunk or Treat event is one of the many events planned to help improve the literacy outcomes in our community.

Over 150 volunteers from schools, churches, and community organizations purchased and distributed Halloween candy from decorated cars and trunks. To enhance the reading experience, designated reading tents were staffed with community volunteers. At the same time, the L4GA team gave away over 10,000 dollars in new books to individuals, from the young and old alike.

“It was fantastic to see volunteers of all ages helping to place books in the hands of all of our children, youth, and parents. This event was a great way to provide a safe, fun Halloween experience for young children while engaging families and volunteers in the future of our communities. Reading is the key to success, and Trunk or Treat put over 3000 books in the homes in Meriwether County,” commented Susan Zeigler, Rotarian, and L4GA Coordinator, Meriwether County School System.
